Summary/Abstract: The text analyses the geographical reality of the insignia of late Roman offi cials preserved in the Notitia dignitatum in partibus Orientis, the unique document of the late Roman imperial chanceries from the turn of the 5th century. It indicates that the effi gies of fauna in the insignia of the comes limitis Aegypti, dux Palaestinae and dux Arabiae (Not. Dig. Or. 28, 34, 37) should also be considered as topographical allusions included in the representations of the insignia of comes limitis Aegypti, comes per Isauriam, dux Thebaidos, dux Palaestinae, dux Mesopotamiae, dux Arabiae, dux Armeniae and dux Scythiae (Not. Dig. Or. 28–29, 31, 34, 36–39). The author links the presence of all topographic details with the intention of the Notitia dignitatum to give the emperor and other members of late Roman elite a relatively coherent picture of the geographically remote regions of the eastern part of the Roman Empire. He subsequently relates it to the functioning of human brain as a pattern recognizer shared universally by human beings, calling for the inclusion of data collected by evolutionary psychology and other evolutionary research in historical studies.
