Summary/Abstract: The paper reviews some current issues related to the energy sector in Bulgaria. An evaluation and a comparative analysis of our electrical energy sector and those of leading European countries was made. The characteristics of the main electrical companies in the country and the inputs for production of electrical energy are described. The primary and secondary consumption of electrical energy by sectors of the economy is characterized. Conclusions are made about the current state and the development of the sector. The paper reviews some key moments of the development of the electrical energy sector. Special attention is given to the restructuring of NEC and the elimination of the state monopoly. An important issue related to the reform in the sector is the liberalization of the electrical energy market. Conclusions are made about the structure and the relations in the sector during the reforms. An analysis of the positive and negative effects of the reform is made. Some misgivings about potential conflicts are expressed. On the grounds of detailed analyses and evaluations the author has formulated some practical recommendations concerning the development and the expected possibilities for the electrical energy.
