Summary/Abstract: The article questions the current descriptions of the estonian short illative singular and presents an alternative view of its regularity and rules of formation. The arguments are based on linguistically interpretable frequency distributions as well as data taken from a text corpus and from a morphological dictionary. The article argues that contrary to the widespread belief that the short illative represents an exceptional form that does not really fit into the estonian case system it is not only more common than the long illative, but it is also regularly formed and productive for a large set of words with a certain phonological and derivational structure.
