Summary/Abstract: The article is a contribution to the question of the Scandinavian languages as borrowers and lenders in prehistoric times and in the Middle Ages. After a short look at the diffusion of district terms within Scandinavia, the relations to the surrounding parts of Europe are treated. Occasionally, terms spread from Scandinavia to these areas, and on the other hand some terms were borrowed from German, English, and Finnish. The foreign influence on the Scandinavian district terminology is, however, insignificant.
