Summary/Abstract: The author outlines the tendencies of reinterpreting the religious literary tradition in the time of developing the national languages of Bulgarians and Serbs. A critical analysis of the interaction between the National revival’s ideologies and the symbolic values of the modern languages has been done aiming at overcoming the so called syndrome of the national destiny (H. Gladkova). The attitudes of the Russian Orthodox Church to the standardization of the Russian literary language (18th century) and its influence on the Balkans have been followed. The standardization of national Serb-Croat and Bulgarian languages was considered in the wider frames of European Enlightenment and Romanticism and the language policy of the Patriarchate, Catholic and Protestant churches as well. A special attention has been paid to the development of the traditional hybrid register of the Church Slavonic and the importance of the translations of the Bible into new modern languages.
