Summary/Abstract: The paper sets forth the basic points of reference in the school system in the Kingdom of Belgium. A different cultural environment had an effect on the strategies of the educational system, which are decided about at the national level within several departments for upbringing and education. lt also influenced the freedom of education, which is manifested in a free choice of school. The regional division of Belgium results in certain differences in the educational system. These differences are more pronounced in the field of secondary education where one is anxious to satisfy the needs for the personnel necessary for a particular region. Compulsory education lasts twelve years (from the age of six to the age of eighteen), and is free of charge. lt includes six years of primary school, all-day compulsory education, and two years of secondary education. Secondary education is realised in four general types: general, technical, professional and artistic education. ln Belgian university education (at colleges and faculties) it is possible to acquire certificates at undergraduate and graduate studies.
