Summary/Abstract: The Harivaṃśa [HV] presents the lotus (puṣkara) as the first of Viṣṇu’s manifestations. Apart from a brief reference to this theme in HV 31, 14-30, another long passage is devoted to the lotus in first appendix (no 41) of the critical edition. The study of these stories demonstrates the variety of meanings associated with the lotus in the Indian traditions. Not only does it have the connotations of beauty and purity, but it serves also as matrix, world and seat. In the Puṣkaraprādurbhāva, one also finds the lotus-eyed Viṣṇu, a tīrtha bearing the name of Lotus (Puṣkara) and a churning-stick called Puṣkara The presence of the lotus in a myth of the manifestation of Viṣṇu does not seem to be linked exclusively with the notion of fecundity; neither does it spring only from aestheticism. If it is true that action can be compared to a plant and the world of actions to a fruit, it is perhaps not so far-fetched to think that worlds, which appear and disappear, emerge from a lotus which opens and closes, or that such worlds might be placed under the watchful gaze of a lotus-eyed god. I (no 41) de l’édition critique.
