Summary/Abstract: The source of inspiration for alchemy in India was the Chinese Taoism, its Yin-Yang concept and associated ideas of attaining material immortality in which, to begin with, cinnabar (a compound of mercury and sulphur) was accorded pride of place. These, on transmission, found a congenial environment in tantrism and assumed new but characteristics Indian dimensions.
