The Importance of being Enslaved

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the text is to interpret the folkloristic construction of Bulgarian identity through the case study of the online debates on the “Turkish yoke”. Are those efforts for protecting the national pride an attempt for the reimagining of the social bond and solidarity? Why are the folkloristic versions of identity so conservative? The text argues that public institutions have withdrawn from the process of imagining a new social bond and thus resort to the most stable narrative, to one of the national metaphors.
