Summary/Abstract: The destruction of the WTC twin towers in New York, until then the landmark in Manhattan’s skyline and bearer of its identity, triggered a series of processes for the renewal of the affected area. To gain ideas for intervention in the urban structure on one of the most expensive and elite sites a competition was organised to which many famous architects were invited, while parallel research of public opinion and negotiations between landowners, planners and investors are being conducted. Despite the emotional and political weight put on the site an exceptional opportunity for architectural and urban design ideas has been offered, one which could dictate trends and become the model for renewal of the identities of cities.
