Description of Epistemic Adverbs as a Theoretical Challenge

Summary/Abstract: The subject matter of this paper is the presentation of the research on a numerous and internally diversified group of phrases (such as {przypuszczalnie, prawdopodobnie, pewnie, widocznie, niewątpliwie}) which genetically can be perceived as adverbs with endings –{e} and –{o} (typical in this class) and which are synchronically most often classified as modal particles. The phrases are used to make comments about a performed act of speech and therefore operate on a metalinguistic level of an utterance. Author’s main objective is the examination of all usage possibilities of epistemic adverbs in various contexts: (i) in declarative, imperative, interrogative sentences; (ii) in the antecedent and consequent of conditional sentences; (iii) in direct and indirect speech; (iv) in various places of an utterance: along with its thematic and rhematic construction and along with the description of their typical usage including also some negative material. Other goals of the paper are: v) the construction of general semantic representation of the epistemic adverbs in which all the discussed phrases can be reflected but most of all vi) the presentation of a specific combination of egocentric and non-egocentric elements of the analysed meanings.
