Security Studies – Prospects of the Discipline

Summary/Abstract: This article examines the evolution of security studies, focusing on recent development in the field. This article provides a survey of the field and a guide to the current research agenda. The field of security studies has been the subject of considerable debate in last decades. Within this debate the scope of the field was broadened and deepened beyond its traditional focus on states and military conflict; the contemporary focus of the field includes also non-states actors and non-military threats. Security studies is today an interdisciplinary enterprise, which include topics such as national security, conventional warfare, international conflicts as well as global warming, migration flows, sustainable development and human rights.
