Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper was to define quantitatively and qualitatively the branch structure of the Bulgarian economy according to the proportion of the employed in the different macroeconomic branches in the years 2000, 2010, and 2020. This structure should be able to ensure step by step, continuous and long-term increase of the international competitiveness of the Bulgarian economy. Main guideline (criterion) for that definition were the long-term tendencies in the changes of the structures of the branches of macroeconomy (according to the proportion of the employed in the different macroeconomy branches), its present state and the expected future changes in the comparatively smaller, but developed European countries like Sweden, Switzerland, Finland, Norway, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Austria and Spain. The general conditions and prerequisites for that definition were the state of the macroeconomic branch structure in Bulgaria before the beginning of the transition to market economy, the type and character of the implemented reforms for the transition, and type and the character of the market economy itself, that will result from these reforms. The paper clearly shows the economic and social consequences of these necessary changes.
