Summary/Abstract: Movements of the population in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the 19th century do not have a specific cause and they correspond to the “metastatic” paradigm proposed by Cvijić. If sometimes they were forced, their immediate cause was not an arm intervention. Quite contrary, in diplomatic and nationalistic clashes that had taken place in the middle of the 19th century in Bosnia and Herzegovina, political factors had quickly corrected their consequences. That is how the migrations of the Muslims from Bosnia and Herzegovina to the Ottoman Empire prior to 1914, that have elicited abundant controversy, should be understood. They do know bear any semblance to the migrations that have taken place in the 20th century and which may indeed be interpreted as a result of human engineering. They neither have much in common with what the Young Turks had done in their Balkan territories or in Anatolia between 1910 and 1924.
