Regional and Settlement Developing Activity of Local Grovernments

Summary/Abstract: So far local governments in the counties have mainly worked as maintainers of institutions, they made every effort to meet the requirement to develop the area partly through implementing developments, and partly assuring own sources to projects. Their regional development activity, however, was not efficient enough owing to the lack of budgetary sources and authority, they could not influence the county’s position on the merits. Conceptions concerning the modification of the recent Act on Local Governments depict a quite contradictory picture in regard to the future. While county local governments can gain a fundamental role in regional development through the expansion of their tasks and allocated sources, they could lose their public service tasks and the institutions.
