Summary/Abstract: The focus on short-term and parochial interests is one of the main drawbacks of contemporary democratic politics. The lack of a universalistic perspective in the political system has been compensated by the growing sector of social movements. For someone who wants to understand the way these movements describe society and what kinds of problems they are confronted with, Niklas Luhmann’s works are indispensable. Luhmann describes social movements and sociology as two different forms of observation and description of the society, and claims the kind of description practiced by social movements to be paradoxical. However, in Luhmann’s vision sociology is an alienated science that has to pay a big price for its cognitive achievement, in that is it loses its practical reference that distinguishes the social movements.
