TRAINING OF FUTURE SPECIALISTS OF SERVICE SECTOR FOR PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION IN THE PROCESS OF STUDYING FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Summary/Abstract: The Standards of higher education for training specialists in the service sector (tourism, hotel and restaurant business) determine that professional communication is an important condition for effective customer service and productive functioning of this branch of economy. The relevance of speech competence formation in students is related to the fact that their professional activity is of «Human-to-Human» nature and is based on communication and interaction with other people. On the grounds of scientific literature analysis, the article clarifies the essence of the concepts «communication» and «professional communication». The peculiarities of the process of professional communication in the service sphere are determined. Methodological approaches to training future specialists in the service sphere for professional communication in the process of learning a foreign language are substantiated. The content, methods and forms of the relevant training are highlighted. Professional communication of specialists in the service sector is regulated by the rules of professional etiquette. Its effectiveness is influenced by social and communicative skills, the level of speech competence; personal qualities (ability to understand others based on tolerance, respect for other people’s opinion, etc.). A special feature of the professional activity of a specialist in the service sector is that it is carried out mainly in direct contact with consumers and is aimed at clarifying their needs and determining ways to satisfy them. In the process of communication, it is necessary not only to contribute to the maximum satisfaction of the consumer’s needs, but also to create an appropriate psycho-emotional atmosphere, to keep up an informal conversation. The article deals with the experience of training students of these specialities for professional communication in the process of learning a foreign language at S. Kuznets Kharkiv National University of Economics. The competence paradigm in learning a foreign language is realised due to introduction of communicative and activity-oriented approach as well as culturalogical one, that allows determining goals, content, appropriate methods, and forms of the educational activity. The communicative and activity-oriented approach facilitates development of basic speech skills together with social-communicative skills, which are necessary for service sector specialists in their professional activities. The culturalogical approach ensures mastering of a foreign language as an integral part of another culture due to texts on professional and intercultural topics, dialogues and situations that reproduce the realia of spoken and professional communication. The system of methods («brainstorming», role-playing and business games, discussions, debates, presentations, etc.) ensures not only learning the educational information and acquiring professional communication experience, but also forming the specialist’s personality, their socio-communicative and professionally important qualities.
