Summary/Abstract: This work examines the origin of the Cap of Monomakh and its connection with the Treasury of the Muscovite princes. The ornament of the Cap's arching gold panels suggests that they originate from two non-extant pieces of headgear. On the basis of a critical analysis of royal wills and recent historiography the author concludes that the panels of the Cap were originally parts of two ceremonial helmets commissioned by Ivan II the Fair (1353-1359) for his sons, Dmitrii (would be Donskoi) and Ivan.
