Summary/Abstract: This article takes up the question of the impact of the body–instrument relationship on the development of violin technique in traditional cultures. The author uses fieldwork materials and historical sources to demonstrate the enduring presence of old performance models and their potential as a source of information about the early violin idiom. She indicates that the ergonomics of body movement, instrument construction and the functions of music in local culture co-determine violin playing techniques and shows that archaic performance models have survived in traditional practice as relics that nevertheless serve as functional idioms of violin technique.
