Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the scientific report is to present the “Peperuda” (But¬terfly) and “German” customs in the region of Samokov and Pleven re¬gion through unpublished field materials. The “Peperuda” custom has a general Bulgarian character and does not have a fixed calendar date, and is performed mostly during a pro¬longed drought. The main ritual person is a pure girl (virgin girl) – an orphan or the youngest child in the family (last child in the family, with living parents). “German” consists in making a clay figure – a dead man. It is performed immediately after the “Peperuda” and is spread mainly in Northern Bulgaria, but it is also registered in the Southern Bulgarian lands – Sliven, Karnobat and Burgas, and in some variants – in Yambol and Elhovo.“Peperuda” (Butterfly) and “German” form a single common holiday-ritual complex, the main purpose of which is the desire to appease the divine heavenly and underground forces, on which moisture, fertility, and well-being depend throughout the year.
