Summary/Abstract: In 1987 former students of training analyst István Székács compiled a photo album to surprise him on his 80th birthday. The title of the booklet is Brigádnapló – Diary of a Team of Workers – and it has an artificial leather cover. Some of the photos in it can be described as conventional: Székács standing amidst a group of his students but the majority of photos are portraits of note. These are portraits of psychologists, one on a page. Those pages include graphic motifs and humorous or puzzling inscriptions. Those familiar with the psychologists concerned could obviously understand the references. Produced by psychologists – whose profession is to help other people to understand themselves – this album is a tongue-in-cheek exercise in self-observation. The album offers insights into Székács’s career and the lives of psychotherapists in general. It can also be seen as unconventional source for studying the history of psychoanalysis in Hungary, which underwent a rebirth when Hungary transited from Communism to multi-party democracy.
