Summary/Abstract: The crisis of values, as a product of transformations/ cataclysms in social-political life, with an impact on man’s relationship to reality process and on his way of thinking, reflected in literary works, can be pursued throughout human history, from Antiquity until present. In such situations, the safety and stability feeling disappears, the support in previous values is also lost. At the same time, there is a need to create new values, new self-knowledge tools, new reference models that correspond to the reality in transformation. Concerning literary creation, this research focuses on some processes and works from late Renaissance period (tragic Humanism), as well as on those from the second half of 19th century (Symbolism, Aestheticism, Decadentism) and from 20th century (“lost generation” literature, Modernism with its manifestations, Theater of the Absurd, Postmodernism, etc.). The crisis of values, in various contexts and assessments, can be traced throughout the development of human thought, from antiquity to the present day, constituting an integral part of the socio-historical and thought process, with the modern generally being a product of the crisis of the traditional, the need for constant re-evaluation and reconsideration becoming a feature of the thinking and selfawareness of individuals and communities. The 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century are no exception, oscillating between tradition and innovation, between dogmatic and experimental, operating in a field of tension marked by the sign of constant revision of old values and patterns of thought in search of new essences that correspond to new systems of reality.
