Summary/Abstract: The article is an initial analysis of the state of research on 20th-century Russian literature, taken up in Russia and in Poland after the political transformation of the soviet country. It was followed by numerous changes also in cultural area, especially in literature: the decline of the so-called “soviet literature of CCCP nations”, integration of Russian literature, previously divided into home and emigration, official and underground, disappearance of literary centralism and degradation of the writer’s prestige, shift in the hierarchy of literary values, commercialization of literature. Internet brought about a real revolution in Russian literary life in the 1990s. The changes forced reinterpretation of Russian literature, particularly of the 20th-century literature, which had the most distorted picture in the soviet times on the one hand, and introduction of a new research methodology and studies on new problems, which were a taboo in the previous epoch on the other. One of the most crucial issues that literary theorists faced was periodization of literature, widely commented in media and forums. Both literary theorists and culture experts intend to turn it away from ideology, to distinguish esthetic paradigms rather than political epochs. The article presents various projects of periodization as described during a discussion in the magazine “Woprosy Litieratury” at the beginning of the 90s and in later published academic Russian handbooks (e.g. edited by S. Timina, L. Kremiencew, N. Lejderman and M. Lipowiecki) as well as in Polish ones written by St. and G. Poręba (1994) and edited by A. Drawicz (1997).
