Summary/Abstract: In the following article the activity of bishop Martin von Gerstmann on the field of artistic patronage was described. The bishop comes as a personage of Renaissance, entirely conscious of the significance and role of art in the mission he was about to fulfill for eleven years of bishopric and occupying the post of the general king’s representative in Silesia. Numerous, valuable foundations designed for the main churches of the bishopric came together with some acts faming his own name. It seems that the bishop appreciated his nobleman’s dignity, resulting from his education and diplomatic talent, more than the prince title he gained due to his promotion. As the most expressive example of such an attitude comes his choice of the type of his own entombment. The bishop may have assumed that in the times he was living and serving such honoured dignities what could have distinguished him was his intellectual and spiritual attitude. This attitude in the age of Renaissance decided a man’s position, his authority and last but not least his friendships with the most prominent personalities.
