Summary/Abstract: The certain names, whose bearers embody a certain era, have extremely national connotations and combine the main characteristics of a particular ethnic group, can be emphasized in the history of every nation. One of the key figures that express symbolically the Russian national character is Stepan Razin. The goal of this study is to identify the conceptualization’s features of the name Stepan Razin in the art world-view by Vasily Shukshin. For Shukshin he has become, first of all, the most striking historical person, to whom the writer had considered to be related hereditarily. And secondly, for the author Stepan Razin was a hero who fomented the uprising and so awakened the people’s desire to cast off their external chains, gave them spiritual, inward will. In his works Vasily Shukshin compared the name “Stepan Razin” in the vertical context with Jesus Christ, St. George the Victorious, the heroes of the Russian epos. The use of this national name, which acts as an archetype of the national character as well as the succinct cultural text, helps to expand the boundaries of the art discourse.
