THE VAQF OF SINAN PASCHA AND ITS INFLUENCE ON THE URBANISTIC AND CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT OF ELBASAN DURING THE CENTURY. XVI

Summary/Abstract: Elbasan was one of the most important economic, political, demographic and cultural cities of Albania during the period of Ottoman rule. Positioned in a strategic area, which had always been the axis of connection and communication in the fields of culture, economy but also a space of military and political rivalry between the West and the East, Elbasan underwent a very rapid development starting after its reconstruction by Sultan Mehmed II in the summer of 1466. Firstly organized as an sub administrative district depended from Ohrid, within a short time Elbasan returned to the center of the Sandjak, including in its jurisdiction territorial spaces that stretched from the coast of Durrës, Kavaja and Bashtova to the mountainous parts of Çermenika. All these economic and demographic resources were positioned in the center of the Sanjak, the city of Elbasan, which experienced rapid urbanization. This article aims to address the role of endowments, in the specific case that of Sinan Pascha, in the development of an important center of the time such as the city of Elbasan.
