Summary/Abstract: This article focuses on the home kitchen depicted and described in the pages of the popular Estonian SSR magazines Art and Home and Soviet Woman during the Khrushchev Thaw.1 With the help of close reading and image analysis, it endeavours to investigate how the aspiration for aesthetic purity and the scientific-technological agenda were combined in the kitchen projects proposed by magazines under the circumstances of commodity shortage and ideological pressure. A comparison of the editions with such diverse approaches highlights the hidden attitudes and compromises that kitchen designers had to make during the 1960s.
