Summary/Abstract: The study defines the digital state, which represents the result of digitization, at first glance, a virtual double of some state institutions and mechanisms, thus being a public good of a special type. However, the digital state is produced also by the process of digitalization, a deeper and transformative process, which introduces to the world a new type of state power. Technology becomes something more than a tool of statistical agencies, being a type of catalyst of some socio-political processes of power reorganization, with a central role in the activities of the state. Both the legitimacy and the scope of power of the national state are challenged and redefined. The study discusses in this respect other new concepts in political science, such as „digital sovereignty“, „extraterritorialization“, the future of constitutionalism, „data capitalism“, the right to knowledge and “artificial citizenship“.
