Summary/Abstract: This study examines the moral judgments involved in „triage dilemmas“ – situations in which there are two patients but only one of them can be treated. The dilemmas are presented in two different contexts – one with which the participants have personal experience (COVID-19) and one with which the participants do not have personal experience (accident in a factory). Within each context, two dilemmas are presented: resource allocation, where a choice must be made regarding resource distribution, and reallocation, where treatment for one patient has already started. The findings demonstrate that in resource allocation scenarios the utilitarian choice receives the highest support in both contexts. However, when the situation involves potential reallocation of resources, judgment is influenced by the context of the situation. In contexts for which participants have personal experience, the utilitarian choice is less supported than the choice to continue treatment that has already begun. In the context in which participants have no personal experience, the two choices receive similar support. Additionally, the study explores the relationship between the support for different choices and the belief in unpredictability and two dimensions of belief in determinism (fatalistic and scientific).
