Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this report is to present pianist-performer and educator Barry Harris' theory of harmony in jazz. The theory of the genesis of the minor scale, the relationship and interaction between the construction of the chords and their corresponding scales is traced. Practices from music-pedagogical and jazz faculties on an international scale are presented. Through this theory, an understanding of jazz as a style becomes readily available in music education. The conclusions and inferences drawn from this analysis support the interrelationship between jazz and classical music in the aspect under consideration as suggested by Harris.
