PRESENTATION OF THE MAIN PROBLEMS RELATING TO SIGILOGRAPHY

Summary/Abstract: The present essay aims to carry out, as the title suggests, a review of the main aspects of sigilography as an auxiliary science of history. Among the issues discussed are the description of a seal, its making, the various ways of application, the types of seals, the sealing matrices and their making or the materials used to obtain a seal. In addition to the technical aspects, the problems related to the symbolism of the seals are also analyzed, as well as the legal issues related to the use of the seals, such as the right to the seal, the decommissioning of the matrices or the fake seal. The article also outlines the main milestones of the history of sigilography as a science, starting with the first concerns in this regard and ending with modern trends in the field of digitization. Attempts to organize the specialized activity in the field on an international level are also mentioned.
