Summary/Abstract: Hungary, which became a frequent destination for French travelers from the 1820s, was favored by the “explorer fever” of the first half of the 19th century. This phenomenon, also perceptible in the bibliographies, is the result either of a real interest or of the choice of the central European route. The examination of the travel accounts of Marshal Marmont, Anatole de Démidoff, Édouard Thouvenel and Xavier Marmier suggests that, apart from the “general public”, travelers (essential informants or disinformants) become the beneficiaries of the information that their texts contain – just like the elite of the visited country who, informed about the image conveyed by the traveler through the press or by reading the travelogue, can use it to their advantage or react to it.
