Summary/Abstract: During his time in Satu Mare (1878–1885) as a professor of religion, Romanian language, and literature at the Royal High School, Dr. Vasile Lucaciu joined the circle of Romanian intellectuals, though few in number, with whom he endeavored to elevate the cultural level of the Romanians threatened by the danger of denationalization. As a continuator of the Transylvanian School tradition, he engaged in a controversy over orthography with Titu Maiorescu. Still distant from the turmoil of the era, he dedicated himself to the study of philosophy, systematically publishing between 1881 and 1884 a series of materials for young people entitled “Philosophical Institutions”. He consolidated his friendship with George Barițiu and became a good collaborator of Observatorul, a model for the Romanian newspaper in Satu Mare, intended to be named after the city, but which he was unable to establish. His concerns caught the attention of local authorities, sparking a conflict that would lead him to leave the city on the Someș River. Because he demanded to be respected and rewarded for his merits and taxes paid to the state, equally with his Hungarian fellow citizens, he was considered a stubborn and naughty man. Disputes with the “Széchenyi Society”, the scandal in the city council, meant the end of Vasile Lucaciu's teaching career. He was removed from his teaching position, but not from public life.
