Summary/Abstract: At the beginning of his article the author indicates the opinions on the mutual relation between folklore and amateur artistic activity existing in Bulgarian and in Soviet folklore. He further develops the idea that in class societies artistic culture is divided into specialized and unspecialized depending on the character of the artistic work. While in the pre-capitalist societies the basic dimensions of unspecialized artistic culture were outlined by folklore, in the epoch of capitalism the process was far more complex. The new type of unspecialized artistic culture was modelled by specialized art as its organic necessity. On the other hand, relations between persons and the whole system of social ties played an important part in this process. On this basis an attempt is made in the article to explain amateur artistic activity as a subsystem of artistic culture which integrates specialized and unspecialized artistic labour.
