Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the issues concerning the role and place of a child folklore in children’s musical education. In the beginning, folklore in the general and musical culture in Europe and Poland are referred to. Next, the phenomenon of a child folklore, taking into account the role of singing as a primary tool for common music making, introducing children into a beautiful world of music and transmitting knowledge were defined. What is underlined is the importance of three issues that facilitate the process of gaining musical competences through fun and singing: – playing music with children as soon as possible, – collective singing, usually combined with movement (children’s play), – a multi-functionality of music ( the role of songs and musical play activating children). The article aims at showing both musical and educational values underlying a child folklore, and the need to commune with it in the context of contemporary conditions of child musical education. Children get to know a tradition and language that is totally foreign to them through symbols included in song lyrics, acting role-plays and various functions. However, it does not hinder them from identifying themselves with the figures of folk plays and gaining above all cognitive and musical values from them, as well as a common experience of joy.
