Factors Determining the Borderline and Its Projection in Bulgarian Historiography

Summary/Abstract: The authoress examines and evaluates the significance of the different factors characterizing the frontier problems and finds their projection in Bulgarian historiography. Geographical, military-political, economic, cultural, religious, ethnic and other factors influence the frontier as a movable, eternally changing line characterized by permeability and impermeability. Precisely this influence is examined in the study in order to raise such conceptual questions like: How did the border emerge? How people in the Middle Ages established frontiers so as to outline a particular territory? What is the stand of the contemporary researcher who observes and interprets the past and tries to enter into the narrative of the people of the Middle Ages?
