Didactic Gospel by Meletij Smotryc’kyj as attempt a codification of the Ruthenian language orthography

Summary/Abstract: The article is dedicated to analysis of Didactic Gospel orthography in the translation to ruthenian language by Meletij Smotryc’kyj (AD 1616). As it was shown by the analysis, M. Smotryc’kyj introduced to the text many new spelling principles, quite different from previous and traditional ones which were existing at the time, and corresponded to pronunciation of Old-Ukrainian language. Nature of systems’ changes and its internal consistency could be considered as attempt a codification of the fundamental rules of the ruthenian language orthography.
