Summary/Abstract: The data from the last year’s census have unleashed a wave of public angst and self-doubt about the fate of the nation. The Social section argues that such concerns are misplaced, and that what really matters are the government policies which in the last decade have contributed much more than the natural demographic trends to the current high dependency rate, for example. It is advisable to shift government policy so as to take into account these trends, especially by introducing incentives in the social insurance system to encourage people to contribute longer and rely less on public social security.
