Summary/Abstract: In the 2000s, the rise of left-wing governments in Latin America gave way to important changes in the Middle East policies of the regional countries. Leftist leaders who rose to power during this period called Pink Tide overwhelmingly sought to diversify their countries’ foreign relations to pursue policies more independent of the United States and forge new south-south economic partnerships. In this context, alongside historic advancements in ties between Latin American and Arab states, unprecedented Latin American-Iranian and Latin American-Palestinian rapprochements took place. Even though the radical changes in Latin American countries’ Middle East policies initially did not adversely affect Israel-Latin America relations, the Mavi Marmara incident and Israel’s military operations against the Gaza Strip drew severe criticism from many Latin American countries and led to significant tensions in bilateral relations. In July 2014, Israel-Latin American relations plunged to the lowest levels following IDF’s Operation Protective Edge. However, from the year 2015, economic and political changes at global and regional levels brought the end of the Pink Tide and the resurgence of right and centre-right governments in Latin America opened a new chapter in Israel-Latin America relations.
