Summary/Abstract: The course of one of the most protracted conflicts in the history of European-Ottoman relations – the war of the Holy League, 1683–1699 – is surveyed in the article. Attention focuses on the Habsburg monarchy and its southeasteren policy in those years. Stress is laid on the principal events in this confrontation: the Christian victory at Vienna (1683), the expulsion of the Ottomans from Hungary (1686–1687), the Habsburg advance to the centre of the Balkans (1688–1689) and the two victories of toe imperial army at Slankamen (1691) and Zenta (1697). Finally stress is laid on the importance of the peace accords of Sremski Carlovci (January 1699) for Southeastern Europe and for toe Habsburg Empire.
