Summary/Abstract: On the basis of the history of the links between Mediaeval Bulgaria and Rome are outlined the prerequisites for the emergence of two Catholic episcopates in Bulgaria in 1365. The direct occasion for this was the conversion of 200 000 Bulgarians in Vidin by Franciscan monks, after the occupation of the town by the Hungarians. Catholic episcopates were established in Vidin and Veliki Preslav. A throne was set up also in Sikadien. loan was elected bishop of Vidin and Elia – of Preslav. It seems that the latter did not live in his dioceses. The Sikadien episcopate proved to be nonexisting.
