Summary/Abstract: The prehistory of the First Turnovo Uprising of 1598 is an insufficiently studied field of Bulgarian historiography. The cause for this is the existence of few sources and documents of the period in the Bulgarian archives. A broader examination of the question, putting it in as general European context and the clarification of the East-European relations at the time of the Fifteen Years’ War, offer rich material for research. This article is the first report on such research. It deals with material from the first half of 1594 when the Southern Slavs, who in the Hungarian sources in the majourity of instances are called Raschani by that name referring to both Serbs and Bulgarians, established contacts with the Transylvanian Principality and Wallachia for building up a common anti-Ottoman alliance. Besides the military operations, the article follows up the extensive correspondence and diplomatic activity which defined the Bulgarians’ participation in the Fifteen Years’ War.
