Summary/Abstract: On the basis of consular reports and other material from the Vienna archives the following problems are examined in the article: the internationalization of the emigre question and the position of the official Ottoman authorities on it, the process of Islamization, the internal misunderstandings, political discords, leaders’ ambitions and the appearance of hostile camps among the exiles, peculiarities of their stay in Shoumen (social status), the roads of their dispersion in and outside the Ottoman Empire and finally the relations of the Bulgarians with Hungarians and Poles after the revolutionary situation in Central and SE Europe in 1848–1849.
