Summary/Abstract: At a time when the world has been invaded by social networks and self exhibiting, it seems appropriate to examine how, historically, portraits - painted of photographed - have borne extremely clear gender issues. For a long time they represented the relay of sterotypes which they contributed to reinforce right up until the 20th century. The extent to which the transformative dimension has been grasped by socially-aware, contemporary artistic practices, thereby fostering other fantasies, both feminine and masculine genders, is what will be examined hereafter. The theoretical framework uses the contributions of Gilbert Durand for the study of the imaginary and the methodology is guided by a symbolic hermeneutics.
