Summary/Abstract: Clement of Ohrid and Exarch John were regarded as teachers in the faith as preachers of Christian doctrine and dogma among Bulgarians in the tenth century. Not the formal ministration, but the gospel preaching, which they compiled and pronounced, have given knowledge of new and old Bible events and personalities. Particularly instructive and educational are Clement’s words. Thanks to his sermon, the audience of ex-pagans could learn what the Trinity, the Ten Commandments of God, the story of the Birth of Christ and the Resurrection were, to learn the meaning of baptism, the great Christian holidays, and what they meant, to learn about sins and punishment, the need for repentance. His words are first and foremost narrative stories, told as understandably as well as instructively and specifically targeted to gospel events. The “students”, in fact, Clement’s listeners, were the “simple” worshipers in the ancient Bulgarian temples in which he preached. By contrast, Exarch John is more rhetorical, philosophically deeper and complex, probably because his audience belonged to the educated circles of medieval society of the tenth century.
