Summary/Abstract: Bulgarian state policy concerning ethnicity finds one of the most clear-cut manifestations in the structuring and development of the feature of “nationality”. Within the frameworks of the ethnological analysis of ethno-statistics, the range of problems, associated with this feature, is extremely interesting and diverse and has not been fully investigated in depth. The observations on the feature of “nationality”, included in the official results of censuses in Bulgaria between 1885 and 2001, present in its initial form the hypothesis of the operation of this feature as a means of achieving a consolidation of “the Bulgarian” “ethnic group” and of transforming Bulgaria into a one-nation state during the 20th century. The more detailed study of this range of problems leads to the analysis of a specific question: about the explicit and implicit existence of the idea of “a normal combination” of different features in Bulgarian ethno-statistics, viz.: “mother tongue”, “confession”, “nationality”, etc., which will as a whole be the object of studies of subsequent publications. The tables drafted present all the available official results of censuses between 1885 and 2001 concerning nationalities, as well as their development on an absolute and a relative scale. The tables may serve as a basis or may help in future diverse investigations on the Bulgarian ethnic space.
