Summary/Abstract: The criminal protection of the election process has been the subject of legislation since the adoption of the first Bulgarian Criminal Law in 1896. Historically, it has undergone a complex development, characterized by a lack of consistency and ambiguous assessment of the object of legal protection. Crimes against the election process have evolved from encroachments on state power to offenses against human rights. This article provides a brief historical overview and analysis of the relevant provisions in Bulgarian criminal law. The crisis of the current political reality, the lack of continuity in the legal framework and the ineffective fight against crimes against citizens' suffrage, make the topic particularly relevant, requiring to overcome the weaknesses and gaps in the Criminal Code through legislative changes.
