Summary/Abstract: The history of the Romanian symphony began with the attempts made during the second half of the 18th century, continued with the significant moment of Enescu's creation and reached its high tide with the works produced during the late 20th century. This paper proposes an analysis of the works produced during the genre's most significant years, with an emphasis on aspects related to musical stylistics, methods of building the macro structure and the use of the sonata form in the symphonic movements. The musical examples extracted from the works of Toduţă, Ţăranu, Timaru, Berger, Niculescu, Bentoiu, as well as from those of the author of this paper, are relevant for the way in which the Romanian local element can be assimilated to a music that reaches out to universality
