Summary/Abstract: Elena Greco is one of the female characters in the quadrilogy Amica geniale quadrilogy. Her growth is closely linked and conditioned by the fate of the Neapolitan quarter, called the “rione”. This article deals with the theme of the escape from misery and oppressive patriarchal power, which suffocate and imprison especially female figures. My intention is to identify the reasons why Elena wants to escape from her nest and build her life away from all her affections. The poverty of the families in the quarter and their need for work and money prevented especially the females from continuing their studies: They did not have the privilege of the culture and the particular values it transmitted, hence, they could not know its intellectual values. She (Elena) realizes that the only solution to succeed and the only mechanism to rescu herself was her education, strict discipline and upbringing.
