Summary/Abstract: This work provides an overview of the legislation that is intended to protect archaeological heritage. It is focused on the most significant legal sources at international, European and national levels. A case study of the legal framework and infrastructure of the cultural heritage in the USA is presented. There is also a list of most useful on-line links of the institutions, documents and journals from Europe and the USA; list of laws on archaeological heritage preservation from the Republic of Moldova, Romania, Ukraine; list of resolutions, recommendations and European conventions; list of decisions, recommendations and international conventions and list of scientific literature. In appendix we added the following laws Law of the Republic of Moldova on protection of the monuments, no. 1530-XII, 22.06.1993, Charter for protection and Management of the Archaeological Heritage, Venice, 1990, European Convention on the Protection of the Archaeological Heritage (revised), Malta, 1992 and the project of Law of the Republic of Moldova on protection of the archaeological heritage.
